Sandy Cohen is going back to his roots—his New York City roots, that is.

Peter Gallagher will be recurring on Law & Order: SVU playing Deputy Chief William Dodds, who is described as a “tough-as-nails boss who oversees all of the special victim units in New York City.”

Law & Order: SVU showrunner Warren Leight said in a statement, “I’ve wanted to write for and work with Peter Gallagher since…forever. He’s an actor’s actor—deft with text and subtext; emotion and intellect. Like everyone else in our cast, he’s also a great singer. We’re all thrilled that this long into the show’s run, actors of his quality want to do an arc on SVU.”

The show will be entering its 16th season when it returns on Wednesday, Sept. 24 on NBC.
