Don’t worry, marshmallows. You may not be getting another Veronica Mars movie anytime soon, but the gang from Neptune will have a mini-reunion on the (super) small screen for Play It Again, Dick, a Web series for The CW’s digital-only network, The eight-episode run (debuting in mid-September) imagines a world where actor Ryan Hansen (playing an exaggerated version of himself) tries to capitalize on Veronica Mars fever and jump-start a spin-off show centered on his character, Dick Casablancas. ”It is so meta, it kept rolling back in on itself,” says series creator Rob Thomas. ”It’ll be a little absurdist.” For the show-within-the-show, Hansen pitches that Veronica (Kristen Bell) has given up detective work (again) and Dick has to take up the mantle. In Hansen’s mind, he’s going to be a suave sleuth à la Magnum, P.I. or Starsky & Hutch. But The CW will only fund a pilot if Hansen gets the entire cast to return, including Bell and Jason Dohring (who played Logan Echolls), leading to more than a few false promises (like telling Dohring that it’s a buddy show). ”The set was like the happiest place on earth,” says Thomas. ”Frankly, for all the actors, getting to swear as their Veronica Mars characters was a highlight too.”
