An American has arrived at the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and by the looks of the film’s second trailer, he’s definitely more than welcome. “Lordy Lord,” says Madge (Celia Imrie) when Richard Gere walks into a crowded room at the Indian getaway. “Have mercy on my ovaries!”
The followup to Fox Searchlight’s 2012 hit, which arrives in theaters March 6, follows Dev Patel’s character’s efforts to create the second in what he hopes will soon become a chain of hotels for British retirees. Muriel (Maggie Smith) is installed as the new co-manager of the hotel and she has plenty of acerbic digs for Evelyn (Judi Dench), who contemplates how to take things to the next step with Douglas (Bill Nighy). But they’re not the only couple experiencing some unexpected growing pains, as Norman (Ronald Pickup) and Carol (Diana Hardcastle) deliberate the tricky terms of exclusivity. And with Sonny’s colorful Bollywood-inspired wedding to Sunaina (Tena Desae) in the works, there’s plenty of lighthearted drama at the picturesque hotel.
The sequel, directed by John Madden—who helmed the original that went onto earn $135 million worldwide—also sees the return of actors Lillete Dubey and Penelope Wilton and the appearance of several new characters, played by David Strathairn and Tamsin Greig.
