Unlike many people in bands, the members of Californian pop duo Chelan actually have day jobs making music: Jen Grady teaches classical music, while Justin Hosford is a composer for film and television. Their work outside the pop format seems to have an influence on the material they create together.

Their latest single, “Before It All,” from their upcoming album Equal Under Pressure, which they’ll release on their own Echo Phone label on Feb. 17, combines radio-ready hooks with an ambitiously experimental bent. With its percolating percussion, washes of near-ambient synthesizer, and cleverly multitracked vocals, their new single “Before It All” should appeal to fans of Kate Bush and Lorde alike.
