Amazon to produce indie films for theatrical release

Amazon

Amazon is getting into the indie game. The retailer plans to produce and acquire original films for both theatrical release and Amazon Prime Instant Video release, with production set to begin this year.

The new Amazon Original Movies imprint will release its original films on Prime Instant Video four to eight weeks after they make their theatrical debuts. The goal is to create 12 films a year, with creative development led by Ted Hope.

“Audiences already recognize that Amazon has raised the bar with productions in the episodic realm, tackling bold material in unique ways and collaborating with top talent, both established and emerging. To help carry the torch into the feature film world for such an innovative company is a tremendous opportunity and responsibility,” said Hope, the new Head of Production for Amazon Original Movies, in a release. “Amazon Original Movies will be synonymous with films that amaze, excite, and move our fans, wherever customers watch. I am incredibly thrilled to be part of this.”

Fresh off its Golden Globe wins for Transparent, Amazon has several other projects in the works—including a Woody Allen TV series, a Guillermo del Toro project, and an additional seven new pilots.
