For the past two weeks, Originals fans have witnessed the romantic side of Jackson, played by Nathan Parsons, as he proposed to Hayley and the couple embarked on the truth-telling journey that will lead to their mystical union. But there’s more to Jackson than long hair and loyalty.
We chatted with Nathan Parsons about what Jackson might be hiding, his upcoming fight with Klaus, and more:
EW: We know that Jackson has a secret regarding Hayley’s parents. How is that secret going to change things between them?
NATHAN PARSONS: It’s something that Jackson’s known for a long time and when you love somebody but you know something that could hurt them, it’s really hard to bring yourself to say it, so sometimes you have to keep that secret. But I think as nervous as Jackson may be about having a secret of his own, he knows Hayley has hers and the whole point is, Let’s just clear the air, let’s get all this stuff out in the open and let the chips fall where they may. Of course, you’re nervous going into that, but I think ultimately it will be a good thing. She might be upset at first, [but] hopefully she’ll be able to get over it. I think he genuinely does care for her and he genuinely wants to be a good guy, maybe even atone for past sins, so we’ll see.
We’ve been seeing such a sweet side of Jackson recently, but with Klaus headed his way, are we about to see him get a little defensive?
Oh, yeah. Jackson’s never liked Klaus, and Klaus does not like Jackson. They’ve been spiraling towards this fight for a year now, and it’s not going to be pretty. It’s pretty brutal, as it needed to be. And I think it’s been a long time coming.
We, the audience, know that Hayley’s big secret is that Hope is alive. Do you think Jackson would be able to handle that secret? Is he trustworthy?
Yeah, I think he can. When you love somebody and they have a child, you love their child. You just accept it as a part of who they are and you care about them and theirs. Jackson cares for Hayley truly, so hopefully they he’ll be able to deal with it. I think he will.
Will we get more of Jackson’s backstory?
I would love that. I would love to see flashback stuff about how he triggered his curse back when he was a kid and about what life was actually like in the bayou being hunted all the time. I would love to go into more of that, and I think if we have time, it’s definitely worth exploring.
Outside of Hayley, what can you say about what’s coming up for him?
If [the wedding ceremony] works out, then he and his pack are going to run New Orleans again—or try to, at least. And if it works out and they have all this power, I think there’s a whole other level of responsibility that comes [with it]. It’s one thing to organize a bunch of people living in trailers in the swamp; it’s another thing to run a city. As we move forward, if everything goes according to plan, we’ll start to see more of the royalty side of the two of them that we’ve talked about.
Is Jackson cool with Elijah at this point?
They’ve never really been cool. I don’t think they ever will be. It’s oil and water. They just don’t mix. But going back to season one, there’s a respect level there. When the wolves first came out of hiding, Elijah and Jackson sort of came to terms because they want to co-exist and “I may not like you but at least I respect you.” So I think that does still exist. There is an added frustration that Hayley can’t seem to get over him, but that’s part of life.
Does Jackson truly believe that Hayley will fall for him eventually?
I don’t know that he believes it, but I think he’s desperately hoping. He’s sort of a hopeless romantic in that way. He desperately believes that if she can just look at him for a minute, for just a little bit and get to know Jackson, he’s not a bad guy! He’s a pretty cool dude, if you just give him a chance, so I’m hoping that she can look past Elijah and all this other stuff and just see Jackson for who he is.
Will we be getting more romantic speeches?
Yes. Yes, you will.
Most importantly, if it happens, will he wear demin to his wedding?
[Laughs] Maybe. It would suit him certainly. A flannel tux. That would be hilarious.
