New York Times’ writer David Carr died from complications of lung cancer and heart disease, CNN reports. Carr had previously survived Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which strikes the lymphatic system; he wrote about his experiences with cancer in his 2008 memoir, The Night of the Gun.

Carr, famous for his columns, memoir, and showcase appearance in the 2011 documentary Page One: Inside the New York Times, collapsed in the Times newsroom Thursday evening and was pronounced dead at the hospital that night. He was 58.
