For the past few weeks, the Winchesters haven’t seen much of the King of Hell. They’ve been busy saving people and hunting things while he’s been dealing with having his mother around. But Tuesday night, when Cain, the Father of Murder, returns to Supernatural, Crowley will once again reunite with the Winchesters … and he’s bringing the First Blade.
“The Winchesters are in need of Crowley’s help at this point,” says Mark Sheppard, who plays Crowley. “Crowley is the custodian of the First Blade and the decision has to be made whether Crowley is willing to give the Blade to Dean.”
And although Sheppard is jealous of Cain’s facial hair, which he deemed “the sexiest beard on television,” he doesn’t consider Cain to be a threat to Hell. “I think Crowley can absolutely hold his own in any situation,” he says. “Crowley always believes that he knows what’s going on, and so far he’s apparently been correct about all that. He always has an agenda that’s slightly bigger than the circumstances surrounding him, [and] that covers Rowena and everything else that’s going on.”
Speaking of Rowena, Sheppard admitted that Crowley’s ” obviously got mommy issues,” but there’s much more to come with Rowena and Crowley’s “terrible, terrible relationship.”
“There is an interesting point, which is [that] Rowena is in fact Fergus’ mother, and Crowley sort of doesn’t like the idea of Fergus at all,” Sheppard says. “He tries to distance himself from the idea of Fergus in any shape or form. So there’s the burden of how he feels about being constantly reminded of where he comes from.”
In addition to that, there’s still the question of what Rowena is up to. As Sheppard put it, “What does she want here? Is she looking for a partnership? Is she in opposition to Crowley?” Well, one thing’s for certain: She will find herself on the opposite side of Crowley in tonight’s hour, when Crowley chooses to once again help the Winchesters.
“It’s becoming more and more obvious that Rowena is not happy with Crowley’s relationship with the Winchesters. She’s very vocal about that,” he says. And as for Rowena’s anger toward her son in tonight’s hour, Sheppard added, “When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, it kind of gets difficult. Let’s put it that way.”
But Sheppard isn’t worried that Crowley’s dear old mom is getting the best of him. Rather, he thinks Crowley knows exactly what she’s up to with her lies. “He’s not stupid,” Sheppard says. “He has other fish to fry and other things to do. Plus, the fact is, how can you find out what’s going on unless you let things play out? I think there’s a lot of manipulation on Crowley’s part too. Have we ever had a situation where Crowley didn’t know what was going on?”
Then again, how far will manipulation go when Rowena has magic on her side? “There’s no upside to having a witch around,” Sheppard says. “It never ends well with witches.”
Supernatural airs Tuesday night at 9 p.m. on The CW.
