It’s not uncommon for musicians of all stripes to discover techno and decide to incorporate some of its elements (usually the most obvious ones) into their music. It’s rarer, though, to find an artist working within the techno milieu to reach outside of its boundaries to find handholds in other genres to pull their own music toward. German DJ/producer Fritz Kalkbrenner is something of a studio rat, and shows a clear obsession with transcending stylistic boundaries for the sake of making cool sounds.

On his third LP, Ways Over Water (out March 24 on Suol), Kalkbrenner incorporates bits of postrock, pop, and gospel-inflected soul into his mix, resulting in a unique organic sound unlike anything else on the electronic music landscape right now.
