MGM acquires rights to Taking Flight ballerina memoir

MGM has acquired the rights to the Michaela DePrince and Elaine DePrince’s children’s novel Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, EW has confirmed.

According to Deadline, the studio will adapt the book into a feature length film with Alloy Entertainment. The book follows Michaela DePrince’s life as an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone as she overcomes the odds to become a world-famous ballerina.

DePrince was one of four dancers featured in the Sundance Selects 2012 documentary First Position and recently joined the Dutch National Ballet’s main dance company.
