Just last week, Angelina Jolie published a long confessional in the New York Times about her recent surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes. On Saturday night, she made her first public appearance since that announcement at the 2015 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.
Jolie, who attended the show with daughters Zahara and Shiloh, was up for two awards at the network’s annual entertainment celebration, taking home one orange blimp for Best Villain for her portrayal of the title character in last year’s hit film Maleficent. She lost her other nomination—for Favorite Movie Actress—to Emma Stone. Jolie did manage to avoid being slimed.
After Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt announced her as the winner of Best Villain, Jolie got big hugs from Zahara and Shiloh and was happy to slap the outreached hands of the young people in the audience. Once up at the podium, Jolie delivered an inspirational speech about how when she was young, she was often told she was different. “Then one day I realized something, something I hope you all realize: Different is good,” she told the crowd. “So don’t fit in, don’t sit still, never try to be less than what you are, and when someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up high and be proud.” You can watch the entire speech here.
Jolie most recently directed the critically acclaimed film Unbroken. Her next project is the forthcoming romantic drama By The Sea, which she directed and stars in; the film also features husband Brad Pitt.
