Amazing Grace, a musical about a song, plans summer Broadway opening

(Joan Marcus)

The new original musical Amazing Grace, which tells the true story behind the creation of the famous ballad, has set its sights on Broadway for an opening this summer after a well-received engagement last October in Chicago.

Amazing Grace will open on July 16 at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre following a preview period beginning June 25. The show features music and lyrics by Christopher Smith and a book by Smith and Arthur Giron; Gabriel Barre directs, with Christopher Gattelli choreographing.

The musical tells the story of John Newton, an English musician who comes of age in Britain during a time of slavery and an international fight for freedom. The cast includes Josh Young (as Newton), Erin Mackey, Chuck Cooper, Chris Hoch, Stanley Bahorek, Harriett D. Foy, Laiona Michelle, Rachael Ferrera, and Elizabeth Ward Land, all of whom appeared in the world-premiere production in Chicago. The rest of the 33-member company will be announced shortly.

Amazing Grace will be the second show to open in the 2015-16 Broadway season, following An Act of God (opening May 28) and preceding Penn & Teller (July 7) and Hamilton (Aug. 6).
