Roseanne Barr will likely be celebrating today’s unofficial holiday, but not for the reasons one might expect. “It’s a good medicine,” she told The Daily Beast of pot.
Barr explained in a wide-ranging interview that cannabis relieves her of the pain she suffers from macular degeneration and glaucoma, which she says will leave her blind. (The comedian also enjoys the drug for its ability to open up the mind and make you wonder.)
While Barr has remained relatively far from the spotlight in recent years—spending time on the West Coast with her partner John Argent—she’s still outspoken, whether she’s spouting swear words (“I love colorful language!”) or controversial political opinions. The actress even ran for president in 2012, and her campaign is documented in Roseanne for President!, premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this week. Barr sought nomination from the Green Party, which she did not win, but ended up coming in sixth overall in 2012 after running on three state ballots.
“I thought about starting my own party, the Green Tea Party, a hybrid of freedom and safety net. That’s what I think the future is all about: a limit to government size and power, government made efficient,” she tells the website. “There’s a party called the National Woman’s Party, which started about 100 years ago: That would be a great party to run with.”
While she may not run again, the thought of a woman in the Oval Office doesn’t do much for Barr. “I would rather see the first intelligent, honest American president,” Barr says. “I don’t care what’s in their shorts.”
As for whether or not she’d take a stab at her sitcom Roseanne one more time, Barr says she’s considered it: “I don’t know if I can do it again, I’ve thought about it doing it as a movie too.
“I don’t know. I appreciate living life with no deadlines or stress.”
