Fear the Walking Dead is adding another series regular: Orange is the New Black actress Elizabeth Rodriguez has joined the Walking Dead companion series, EW has learned exclusively.
The actress plays Daya’s mother Aleida Diaz on the Netflix series and had an arc on NBC’s Grimm last year as Agent Chavez. In Fear the Walking Dead, she’s been cast in a mysterious role that sources are keeping quiet about. But given the timing of the casting, it’s safe to assume Rodriguez joins the show after the first episode, since the pilot has already been shot.
The Walking Dead companion series already has a two-season commitment from AMC, and also stars Cliff Curtis, Kim Dickens and Frank Dillane. The show will follow a different set of characters than those in the original, Georgia-set, mega-rated flagship series.
Creator Robert Kirkman has said Fear the Walking Dead will be set in Los Angeles, and also confirmed the story will start earlier than the original series—before the walker outbreak begins. Yet the new show isn’t technically a full prequel, as it will eventually catch up to the timeline of the main show; both will, at some point, see their stories unfolding during the same post-apocalyptic era. The writer-producer also teased there could be cross-over elements between the two series, if not actual characters moving from one show to the other.
Fear the Walking Dead debuts this summer, meaning that AMC will now have zombie action in three separate seasons: fall (the first half of TWD’s season), winter (second half of TWD), and summer (FTWD).
