Jerrica Benton and her glitter-covered girl band are back in the new live-action Jem and the Holograms reboot. And although the film will embrace a somewhat more modern feel, don’t worry: the project is expected retain the classic ’80s vibe that made the original cartoon so popular.
On Monday, USA Today released new stills from the movie, which stars Nashville’s Audrey Peeples as band leader Benton, Stefanie Scott as Benton’s sister, Kimber, and Hayley Kiyoki and Aurora Perrineau as her foster siblings, Aja and Shana. The photos detail a mix of pop and glam while also touching on the more intimate aspects of the group’s dynamics, showing the close relationship between the Hologram girls.
“It’s actually about a group of young people who are going to be inundated with this idea of fame and fortune and products and stuff, and within all that, how do you stay true to who you really are? That’s the real soul of the movie,” director Jon M. Chu said to USA Today.
The reboot also stars Molly Ringwald as Aunt Bailey, the girl-group’s guardian; Ryan Guzman as Rio, the girls’ love interest; and Juliette Lewis as Erica Raymond, a Starlight record executive intent on pushing the girls down a certain path to fame.
