Sometimes being a low-key storyteller gets mistaken for having a lack of ambition or polish. At least that’s what happened to writer-director Andrew Bujalski, who early on in his career was dismissively filed under the mumblecore branch of independent film. What he’s really been going after all these years, though, is realism—the stammering and sometimes awkward way real people communicate in real life. Sometimes his messy, matte-finish approach comes off brilliantly (2013’s Computer Chess), sometimes less so. His new crossed-signal comedy, Results, falls into the second category. Kevin Corrigan plays Danny, a recently divorced, out-of-shape stoner who’s just inherited a ton of money and decides to start fresh by joining an Austin gym, where he meets Guy Pearce’s irrepressively positive owner Trevor and Colbie Smulders’ irresistibly negative trainer Kat. While all three actors are fine, their characters can’t help getting in each other’s and their own ways to the point that you just want to shake them by their sweaty deltoids. Even by Bujalski’s shaggy standards, Results never adds up to much. Instead it just sort of sputters out and settles for a predictable rom-com ending. Conventional doesn’t suit him. B–
