“It’s Disneyland’s ‘Star Tours’ ride based in the 1940s with dashes of Ancient Egypt Blade Runner, and Grease—with Snoop, Pharrell, and Stevie Wonder.” This had to be the verbatim pitch for Snoop Dogg’s music video “California Roll,” the latest single off the rapper’s groovy throwback record Bush. The futuristic visuals beckon images of how ’40s people conceived Los Angeles and Hollywood’s future aesthetic: pyramids, monolithic buildings, air traffic, and whatever Pharrell is wearing.
