FX has ordered a 10-episode first season of The Bastard Executioner from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, the company announced Friday.

The series is set to star Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Katey Sagal (A to Z, Sons of Anarchy), Flora Spencer-Longhurst (Leonardo), Sam Spruell (Child 44, The Last Ship) and newcomer Lee Jones, along with Sutter himself. The Bastard Executioner follows a knight serving under King Edward I who, broken down by war, pledges to lay down his sword. But, of course, the threat of violence returns and he is forced to pick up his duties once more.

“I love history. I love theology. I love blood,” said Sutter in a statement. “It’s been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements. And with this extraordinary cast—Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal and newcomer, Lee Jones—this world explodes on screen.”

Sutter will also serve as executive producer alongside Brian Grazer and Francie Calfo as well as Paris Barclay, who directed the pilot episode.

Filming for the series will pick up again this summer in Wales—the location for the pilot—and is slated to air this fall on FX.
