This year, Memorial Day Weekend is serving as the kick-off for summer—Wet Hot American Summer.
Netflix has released the first images of the much-anticipated prequel series to the 2001 big-screen comedy cult classic, which took place during the last day of camp for the counselors and staff at Camp Firewood in 1981. As you can intuit from the title, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp takes place on the first day of camp that year, and includes all the notable names from the movie (get ready for a long, impressive list): Elizabeth Banks, H. Jon Benjamin, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Janeane Garofalo, Nina Hellman, David Hyde Pierce, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, AD Miles, Christopher Meloni , Marguerite Moreau, Zak Orth, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Marisa Ryan, Molly Shannon and Michael Showalter.
There will also be new, famous blood in recurring and guest-star roles, including Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Chris Pine, and Jason Schwartzman.
The eight-episode series, created by Showalter and David Wain, has a new premiere date: July 31, which is two weeks later than Netflix had announced earlier this year. There is also a possibility of the show continuing beyond those eight installments.
“For us, the original move was about the notion of finishing unfinished business,” Wain said in today’s announcement. “That idea that you have one day to do all the things you wish you’d done but were too afraid. The series is about establishing your identity.” Said Showalter: “We thought it was funny that in the original we played a bunch of teenagers. Now we’re in or forties and our characters are even younger.”
Marvel at how they look in the photos above and below.
