Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan make messy love in Amazon’s Catastrophe

(Amazon)

American boy meets Irish girl, gets Irish girl pregnant, and decides to stay in London for good. That’s the plot of Catastrophe, Amazon’s newest comedy roll-out—which has already been received in the UK as a brash, bawdy, messy twist on the romantic comedy.

Comedian Rob Delaney stars as the aforementioned Yankee, who meets and unexpectedly conceives with a schoolteacher (Irish comic Sharon Horgan) living in London. Delaney and Horgan also serve as the show’s writers and creators.

The Channel 4 series debuted earlier in January 2015 in the UK; all six episodes will stream on Amazon Prime starting June 19.

When it comes to rom-sitcoms, simple seems to be in. FX’s Married and You’re the Worst, no-frills shows that share some similarities with Catastrophe, will live to see second seasons, while higher-concept romantic comedies (A to Z, Manhattan Love Story) floundered last year under the weight of their own narrative structure.
