A+E Networks has acquired exclusive television rights to Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad, and Me, Deadline.com reports. The one-hour documentary, produced by Idris Elba and directed by Daniel Vernon, tells the story behind Elba’s creation of Mi Mandela, an album of South African music he curated in tribute to Nelson Mandela and to his own late father.
Elba played the South African president in the 2013 biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and was inspired to record the album while filming in Johannesburg. Mi Mandela’s 11 tracks, written by Elba himself, are sung by both South African and British artists, including James Black and Mumford and Sons.
The documentary will also air on History in Africa in 2015.
