Hungry Hearts

Genre: Drama, Thriller; Starring: Adam Driver, Alba Rohrwacher; Director: Saverio Costanzo; Release Date Limited: 06/05/2015; Runtime (in minutes): 118; MPAA Rating: Unrated

Jude (Girls’ Adam Driver) and Mina (Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher) meet cute in a Manhattan restaurant bathroom, fall in love, and have a beautiful baby boy. But what begins as a sweetly off-kilter indie romance slides into darker psychological territory as Mina, determined to keep her infant son pure and safe from the outside world, becomes increasingly unraveled. Roman director Saverio Costanzo has a feel for atmospherics, and draws nuanced performances from both leads. As Mina’s grip on reality slips, though, so does the story’s emotional hold, and its blunt finale falls flat like a melodramatic cheat. B–
