John Hurt has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“I have always been open about the way in which I conduct my life, and in that spirit I would like to make a statement,” Hurt wrote on his website. “I have recently been diagnosed with early stage pancreatic cancer. I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team.”

The 75-year-old actor added that he plans to continue working, and he will soon record Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell for BBC Radio 4. Terry Gilliam recently announced that Hurt will star in his upcoming Don Quixote movie for Amazon.

Hurt was knighted earlier this year for his contributions to drama. He has earned two Oscar nominations for his roles in The Elephant Man and Midnight Express, but he is perhaps best known for appearing in films like Alien, V for Vendetta, and the Harry Potter series. In 2013, he starred in Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary episode as the War Doctor.
