Prime Suspect to celebrate 25th anniversary with prequel Tennison

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison is getting a backstory. ITV is developing a prequel to Prime Suspect, scripted by the miniseries’ original writer, Lynda LaPlante.

The previous seven installments of Prime Suspect stretched from 1991-2006 and starred Helen Mirren as Tennison, one of the first female Detective Chief Inspectors with London’s Metropolitan Police. The six-part, 1970s-set prequel, titled Tennison, will follow the character at 22 years old as she navigates the integration of women into the force. The music of the era will play a significant role in setting the series’ tone.

LaPlante told the Guardian in February that she got the idea from a fan: “At an event, a big book signing, a fan came up to me and she said ‘Where did Tennison get that aloof coldness from? What did she do when she was young?’”

The six-episode Tennison will air in 2016, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the original series.
