The first chapter of Harper Lee’s Go Set A Watchman will be published online at The Wall Street Journal on July 10, four days before the hotly anticipated To Kill A Mockingbird follow-up goes on sale. As an added treat, Chapter 1 of the Go Set A Watchman audiobook, narrated by Reese Witherspoon, will be available on WSJ as well.
Go Set A Watchman has been shrouded in mystery and fraught with conflict since its announcement. Only a select few have been able to read it, and those readings have taken place under heavy surveillance. As Lee had been firm earlier in her life about never publishing another book, many fans, experts and industry figures were concerned that Lee’s might be a case of elder abuse—EW’s Tina Jordan even launched a radio investigation on the subject. After it was announced, Go Set A Watchman immediately shot to No. 1 on Amazon’s best-seller list, and still tops the list today.
