Jay Pharoah: Can I Be Me?

Genre: Comedy; Starring: Jay Pharoah; Series Premiere: 08/01/2015; Broadcaster: Showtime; Status: In Season

Topics that SNL star Jay Pharoah tackles in this startlingly unfunny comedy special: Snapchat, Blue Ivy Carter, The Wolf of Wall Street, “What Does the Fox Say?,” and unsettlingly large smartphones. The talented and energetic comedian crams Can I Be Me? with too many stale jokes, using them to sew together his stellar impressions. But any viewer who watches Pharoah on SNL (or YouTube) already knows his pitch-perfect takes on the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, and Chris Rock. It’s the tepid punchlines about ISIS, AIDS, and R. Kelly that even Pharoah’s sky-high charisma can’t save. C+
