Steve Buscemi confirms he never auditioned for Seinfeld

Steve Buscemi learned Friday on The Tonight Show that the internet not only sells Steve Buscemi-based merchandise, but has spread a falsity about Buscemi auditioning for the role of George Costanza on Seinfeld.

“I never did and I don’t know how to correct it because I don’t know how the internet works,” Buscemi told Fallon.

Buscemi said he couldn’t even understand the rumor because he couldn’t see anyone but Jason Alexander playing the role. “Can someone help me change it?” Buscemi asked.

For that he might have to go all the way to Alexander himself. Speaking to Howard Stern in June, Alexander and the SiriusXM host discussed the surfeit of actors who auditioned for the role of George. Buscemi’s name was mentioned. “Buscemi, I had heard [auditioned],” Alexander said to Stern.

Despite Buscemi not being a part of Seinfeld lore, other actors such as Larry Miller, Brad Hall, Nathan Lane and Danny DeVito did audition to play George. Alexander said that DeVito was even offered the part, before turning it down.
