The many faces of Idris Elba and his young costar Abraham Attah are on display in two exclusive character teases for the Netflix original film Beasts of No Nation.

Written and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre, True Detective) and based on the novel by Uzodinma Iweala, Beasts stars newcomer Attah as Agu, a boy torn from his family and forced to serve as a child soldier in an unnamed West African country. A new promo image from the film shows him in three different guises: as child, captive, and killer.

Meanwhile Elba’s Commandant, the warlord who instructs Agu in the grim business of war, is depicted as a savior, ruler, and criminal.

Beasts, which represents Netflix’s first foray into prestige pictures, is set to open Oct. 16 in select U.S. theaters; it will hit the streaming service the same day.
