Rick and Morty creator talks Stephen Colbert guest appearance: 'He kicked ass'

(Adult Swim)

Given Stephen Colbert’s love for fantasy and science fiction, it was surely just a matter of time before the man who once appeared on the cover of EW dressed as Gandalf voiced a character on Rick and Morty. That precise time? Sunday at 11:30 p.m. ET, when fans will see (or hear, anyway) the Late Show host-in-waiting play a hyper-intelligent alien in the latest episode of Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s sci-fi sitcom.

“I think it’s my favorite episode of season 2,” says Roiland. “Stephen Colbert plays a really well-matched rival for Rick. Colbert kicked ass. He really gave us 100 percent and he was so fun to work with and couldn’t have been a better sport. He’s also a great voice for this character, that is just as smart as Rick. With the Needful Things [episode] with Alfred Molina in season 1 (“Something Ricked This Way Comes”), Rick clearly had the upper hand the whole time. In this one, they’re pretty equally matched. It’s interesting to watch Rick be insecure and s–tty about the fact that he knows this guy is pretty f–king smart.”

Check back later in the week to see an exclusive, Colbert-featuring scene from the new episode of Rick and Morty.
