Rapper Kevin Gates was charged with simple battery after kicking an 18-year-old woman at a concert in Florida on Friday. The Lakeland Police Department confirmed the news to EW, which was first reported by ABC Action News.
A press release states that Gates, whose given name is Kevin Jerome Gilyard, “delivered a deliberate kick” to the “stomach/chest area” of Miranda Dixon. It continues, “The kick was with such force that it pushed the victim back into the crowd.” Dixon intends to press charges.
Footage of Gates’ act went viral after the concert, and inspired thousands to sign a petition banning the 29-year-old from other venues. Tampa radio station WILD 94.1 also announced Tuesday that it would not play his music anymore. “I don’t think anyone should be his fan, I really don’t,” Dixon said in an interview with ABC Action News.
Hours after the news broke, Gates released a song called “The Truth,” which contains the lyrics, “You should have respect for yourself. You a queen and you wasn’t respecting yourself.”
