Star Wars Battlefront beta arriving for consoles and PC in October

(EA)

Star Wars Battlefront may not be coming out until November, but those looking forward to the return of the beloved Star Wars gaming franchise will have an opportunity to play a snippet of the game early.

EA Games has announced that a beta for Battlefront will be made available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin in early October. No exact date has been given, but that sets the beta about a month earlier than the release of the game. EA is calling it a “technical test,” likely to ensure the game is set to handle the large multiplayer matches at the core of the gameplay.

The beta will include the Walker Assault on Hoth, a scenario that allows 40 players to compete in a battle showcased during E3 (check out the video below for a taste of what’s involved). That level will also allow players to try their hand at controlling Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.

In addition to a new mode called Drop Zone, the beta will also include the Survival Mission on Tatooine, a wave-based mode where players fight off increasingly difficult rounds of Imperial forces. EW had a chance to play the Survival Mission at a recent preview event, and while the set-up allowed for some fun cooperative strategy, the Walker Assault will likely be a truer test of what Battlefront is pushing in its more intricate battles.

Star Wars Battlefront will release on Nov. 17 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
