As we gear up for the release of Carol, the Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara-starring film based on Patricia Highsmith’s lesbian love story, The Price of Salt, it’s worth revisiting another classic story of romance between women: Isabel Miller’s Patience and Sarah, first published in 1969. (Highsmith’s novel, written under the pseudonym Claire Morgan, was released in 1952).

Audible is releasing the Patience and Sarah audiobook for the first time, with some heavyweights recording the voices of both women in the relationship: Grammy Award-winner Janis Ian and Emmy Award-winner Jean Smart. Listen below for EW’s exclusive excerpts from each star’s recording:
