Tig Notaro’s latest comedy special Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted, debuted to HBO last month, which she promoted on Twitter with the help of a few famous pals like Sarah Silverman and Kumail Nanjiani. But while Notaro might have the best friends in the business now, years ago, while taping another special, she ran into a bit of a problem with a very new friend.

For EW’s Greatest Story Ever Told, Notaro remembers the taping of an earlier special featuring a comedian to warm up the crowd before Notaro took the stage. The comedian revved up the audience, playing up the fact that he and Notaro were besties. Only the two had never met – and he thought Notaro was a guy. Check out the full narrative above.
