Black Mirror revived by Netflix for 12 new episodes

(BBC)

Great news for Black Mirror fans: Netflix has ordered a new season of the cult U.K. sci-fi series.

Moving forward after months of rumors, the streaming company has greenlit 12 episodes of the tech-fi anthology.

Thankfully, original executive producers Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones are on board too.

There’s even a short teaser video (below).

Brooker has started writing the new season, which is scheduled to begin production later this year in the U.K. “It’s all very exciting — a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable,” Booker said. “Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that Black Mirror feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true.”

Added Netflix vice president Cindy Holland: “Charlie has created a one-of-a-kind series with an uncanny voice and prescient, darkly comedic vision. We’re tremendously proud to bring Black Mirror to our members as a Netflix original series.”

Fall TV preview

Black Mirror made its Netflix debut last year. Though the company doesn’t release it’s streaming numbers publicly, the show created a lot of stateside fan and media buzz. For those who haven’t yet watched the series, Black Mirror has a Twilight Zone-style format, except it tends to focus on the impact of current — and potential future — technology. (If you liked Ex Machina, which co-starred Black Mirror actor Domhnall Gleeson, this is a show for you.) The first three episodes were released in 2011, another three came in 2013, and a single episode was made in 2014 — so Netflix’s order dwarfs all previous releases of the show combined. No word yet on when the new episodes of Black Mirror will be released, but if production begins this year as expected, mid or late 2016 would seem likely.
