New Sleepy Hollow showrunner says 'the fun is definitely back'

(Tina Rowden/Fox)

After two seasons of witches, wendigos, and, of course, a headless horseman, Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) and Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) are back for season 3 of Sleepy Hollow this fall — and they’re only just now entering the second of the seven tribulations they must face as Witnesses.

“We have made some creative changes, and we’ve moved the characters forward, so they’re not just dying in place,” new executive producer Clifton Campbell tells EW. “We don’t want anything to ever be too settled in Sleepy Hollow. That would be the antithesis of our show.”

The good news? A trio of new series regulars will be on hand to help them: Lance Gross (House of Payne) joins the cast as Abbie’s FBI boss; Nikki Reed (the Twilight saga) is appearing as Betsy Ross; and Zach Appelman is returning full-time as fan favorite/former wendigo Joe Corbin. But even with all these fresh faces, the heart of the series will still be the relationship between Abbie and Ichabod. “That’s where this show lives,” Campbell says. Other changes this season? “We’re not going to be as mythology-laden as the show has been in the past,” he says. “The fun is definitely back.”

Part of that fun includes two Bones crossover episodes, one for each show, which could find Abbie and Ichabod working alongside Booth and Brennan.

“It’s been a lot of fun talking to those guys on the Bones side of this,” Campbell says. “Obviously, we’re totally different shows, but we looked at that as a real opportunity, both from their side and from our side. Both shows work best when they don’t take themselves too seriously.”
