John Stamos appeared on The Howard Stern Show Monday to speak candidly about his June DUI arrest, an incident which he referred to as “horrific”: “I could’ve hurt somebody,” he said. “It was really stupid and ignorant of me — I hated myself for that.”

The actor cited the incident as the reason he decided to check himself into rehab, but admitted that his substance abuse issues had been going on for years — as far back as an infamous 2007 appearance on Australian talk show Mornings With Kerri-Anne, during which he was “hammered,” the actor confessed.

“I lost myself, and I lost my sense of discipline,” Stamos said of the time. “I was just dipping into that dark place and it was happening more and more and it was just getting darker and darker.”

Thankfully, Stamos says he is now living a sober lifestyle and doesn’t miss alcohol. In fact, alcohol was “not at all” difficult for Stamos to quit — it was Ambien that was hardest to kick. Listen to Stamos recount his dark period and his time in rehab below.
