I think it’s safe to say that we are all pretty horrified about the new Peeple app, which is basically a Yelp for individuals. The app will allow users to give ratings to people that they know using a star system, which may sound pretty familiar to some fans of the show Community. The cult comedy featured an episode last year all about an app that allowed users to give rankings to other people, and the dystopian repercussions that followed.

“App Development and Condiments” was the eighth episode of season 5, airing on March 6, 2014. In it, Greendale Community College agrees to beta test a new social media app called MeowMeowBeenz, allowing users to rank others on a scale of 1-5.

The app becomes insanely popular, and soon a new social hierarchy develops in which those with the highest MeowMeowBeenz ratings — known as the Fives — run the school while the Twos and Ones live in squalor at the lowest rungs of society.

So will Peeple be the new MeowMeowBeenz and overthrow our society, replacing it with a strict, hierarchical order based on social media ranking? Probably nothing so extreme, but the show’s commentary on how we obsessively let social media define us seems more relevant than ever.
