The Martian stars reveal 'bullish' director Ridley Scott's 'nurturing' side

The veteran helmer made quite an impression on just about every cast member in his film.

Director Ridley Scott has a very distinct shooting style: no rehearsals, multiple cameras and rarely more than three or four takes. It’s a process that can be a bit jarring for actors new to Scott’s world, but one they ultimately find very envigorating once they begin working with him, they say.

“I had this vision in my head of Ridley as this general, this taskmaster, and that is true. He definitely is in control and knows what he wants, but the thing that I didn’t expect is how nurturing he is with actors,” says The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard. “He’s always protecting his actors. Everything that’s happening on set is about making them comfortable, making sure their needs are covered, because he has such respect for actors.”

Before The Martian had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month, we sat down with the majority of the cast to talk to them about Sir Scott. Here are some excerpts from our conversations. Take a look in the video above.
