Matilda: Celebrate 1,000 performances of the Broadway show with a special performance

It’s a milestone for any show on Broadway to reach 1,000 performances, but when you’re a show about a passionate bookworm who dreams big… well, it’s a little special.

In celebration of 1,000 performances of Matilda, SiriusXM and Entertainment Weekly radio recently hosted a Conversation with Tim Minchin, moderated by EW’s own Jessica Shaw. Minchin, the brainchild behind Matilda’s music and lyrics, spoke about his involvement in the show and also offered up a few special performances, including a duet of the show-stopper “When I Grow Up,” which he performed current cast member Bailey Ryon.

Minchin told Shaw that there’s a reason why the songs are harmonically the same: “When I Grow Up” was the first song he wrote, while the empowering “Naughty,” was the last song. “We didn’t really know who Matilda was until that third workshop,” Minchin revealed. “And I finally went, “oh, that’s it, she’s this kid.”
