BBC America released a first-look clip ahead of the premiere of The Last Kingdom on Tuesday, giving a sneak peek at the upcoming eight-part drama. From the executive producers of Downton Abbey, The Last Kingdom focuses on England in 9 A.D. as conflict between the Saxons and Danes raged on.

In the clip, a young Uhtred watches his father, Lord Uhtred, violently killed on the battlefield as the Saxon army faces a losing battle. Filled with anger, Uhtred storms onto the field from his hiding place behind a grove of trees, straight to Earl Ragnar — a brutal Danish warlord. While he’s not much a fighter, this “wasp” has hardly lost his sting. The moment changes Uhtred’s life forever, sparking a life-long journey of discovery and purpose.

Based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling series, “The Saxon Stories,” The Last Kingdom debuts Oct. 10 at 10 p.m. ET on BBC America.
