Earlier this week, Rupert Murdoch sent out a tweet suggesting that presidential candidate Ben Carson would make for a “real black president.” Trevor Noah addressed the wave of backlash on The Daily Show on Thursday, and even attempted to (jokingly) defend Murdoch.

“I know what its like to be young and crazy on Twitter. You start to crave those faves and you don’t care how you get them,” said Noah, who found himself under fire in March for tweets made earlier in his career which were perceived as sexist and racist.

Noah went on to poke fun at conservatives who disliked Obama for being too black now that Murdoch is suggesting the president isn’t black enough.

“Let’s be fair, it was late at night,” Noah said of the tweet. “Maybe the guy suffers from insomnia and the only thing that cures it is vaguely racist tweeting.”

Murdoch did apologize for the tweet Thursday morning, saying he meant no offense and he finds “both men charming.”
