One Direction’s concert in Belfast, Northern Ireland, was canceled Tuesday after Liam Payne fell “suddenly ill,” according to a statement from band reps.
“Fans have been asked to hold on to their tickets and there will be a further statement tomorrow,” the statement continues. “The band apologize to their fans and wish Liam well as soon as possible.”
Band members Niall Horan, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson chimed in on Twitter, adding their apologies to fans and, in Tomlinson’s case, wishing Payne well. “Deepest apologies to everyone at the show tonight in Belfast,” Styles tweeted. “Very disappointed, but unfortunately these things happen. We’re very sorry.” Echoed Horan: “So sorry we have had to cancel tonight guys. Unfortunately these things happen … Thank you to all who came down tonight!”
Added Tomlinson, “We’re so so sorry for what happened tonight, it was out of our control! Lots of love to Liam and thank you for being so understanding!”

As fans await more information about Payne’s condition, “#GetWellSoonLiam” has been trending on Twitter.
This is the first time that One Direction has canceled a concert due to illness, and the first time that Payne has pulled out of a performance. To illustrate, when Payne injured his ankle onstage in Portugal in July 2014, he briefly disappeared backstage but reappeared — with the help of his bandmates — to perform the rest of the concert while sitting down.
In the past, the band has moved forward when one of their members has fallen ill — late last year, Tomlinson was forced to bow out of their performance at the NRJ Music Awards, and they performed without Zayn Malik in Orlando last November. Following Malik’s March departure, however, it seems as if performing as a three-piece — and without Payne, whose vocals arguably provide the backbone to 1D concerts — is not possible.
It looks like One Direction will need their upcoming break to recuperate, as they seem to be dropping like flies. Horan has been performing with a walking boot for weeks, and Styles recently broke a bone in his foot.
