Sam Smith has covered Amy Winehouse before — he’s tackled “Tears Dry on Their Own” in several concerts — but this time, he’s taking on “Love is a Losing Game.”

The track will appear on the re-release of his first album,In the Lonely Hour (Drowning Shadows Edition), and he debuted the song on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show Friday.

He told Mac that covering Winehouse just felt right. “That lyric–love is a losing game–is possibly one of the most relatable lyrics that I’ve ever heard.”

But his next album, he said, will come when it’s ready. “With this one, I’m going to be very careful about releasing it when it’s ready. There’s a story to be told, and I’ve got to tell it the right way.”

Hear Smith’s take on the song as well as his interview with Mac below.

Earlier this week Smith premiered the re-issue’s biggest new track, “Drowning Shadows,” on Zane Lowe’s Beats Radio show. In The Lonely Hour: Drowning Shadows Edition is out now.
