America Ferrera talks Judaism with Seth Meyers on Late Night |

America Ferrera wanted to convert to Judaism for the bat mitzvah

When she was growing up, America Ferrera lived in a neighborhood with a high Jewish population, and every boy she had a crush on was Jewish. So, what’s a shiksa to do?

Appearing on Late Night on Tuesday, the actress told Seth Meyers that she wanted to convert to Judaism when she was younger, but certainly not for any noble reasons — not only did she hear that Jewish boys only married Jewish girls, but she also wanted in on a bat mitzvah.

As she discovered, the Jewish people don’t tend to actively seek recruits and she was trouble having the conversion process come to her. However, all’s well that ends well: “I married a non-Jew and it’s working out for me,” the Superstore actress joked. Meanwhile, host Seth Meyers countered that his whole life, everybody “assumed” he was Jewish. Now that he’s married to a Jewish woman, he says he’s discovered the art of conversion without actually doing anything.
