It’s a pretty good time to be the once most-famous male model in the world. According to Paramount, the trailer for Zoolander 2 had the most prolific launch for any comedy ever.
Since its debut on Nov. 18, the Zoolander 2 trailer has been watched 52.2 million times.
The sequel, starring Ben Stiller as the title character, will arrive in theaters 15 years after the original film. The new trailer showed a first glimpse showed old characters (like Will Ferrell’s fashionably evil Mugatu) and new (Penelope Cruz as secret agent Valentina). It also created some controversy: an androgynous character played by Benedict Cumberbatch was criticized as a “cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals” in a petition that called for a boycott of the film.
“This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority,” the petition’s creator, Sarah Rose, wrote. Thus far, the petition has more than 14,000 signatures.
