Benedict Cumberbatch is ready to work his magic once again.
The Doctor Strange star is attached to play the lead role in the fact-based World War II drama The War Magician, Storyscape Entertainment announced Tuesday.
Adapted by Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) from David Fisher’s book of the same name, War Magician tells the story of Jasper Maskelyne, a British illusionist who assembled a team known as the Magic Gang to use prestidigitation to help the Allies confound the Nazis.
Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein of Storyscape, Tony Eldridge of Lonetree Entertainment, and Adam Ackland and Adam Selves of SunnyMarch (Cumberbatch’s production banner) are producing the film, with funding from StudioCanal. A director has yet to be named.
In addition to Cumberbatch’s Marvel magic bona fides — Doctor Strange is shooting now and will hit theaters next fall — the actor previously portrayed an unconventional real-life WWII hero in The Imitation Game. His other upcoming film projects include Zoolander 2, Jungle Book: Origins, and The Current War.
