Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are up to date but still up to no good in the exclusive red band trailer for Band of Robbers, which drops Mark Twain’s classic characters into a comedic heist movie set in the present day.
Written and directed by brothers Aaron Nee and Adam Nee, Band of Robbers stars Kyle Gallner as an adult Huck, who’s hoping to leave behind his life as a small-time crook after being released from prison. Alas, his lifelong friend Tom (Adam Nee) is a crooked cop scheming to liberate a stash of gold from a local pawn shop, and he’ll need some help.
With roughly a quarter of the dialogue taken directly from Twain’s books, Band of Robbers also incorporates some sly contemporary twists, such as re-imagining Injun Joe (Avatar‘s Stephen Lang) as a hardened criminal with a thing for Native American culture.
The cast also includes Supergirl star Melissa Benoist as Becky Thatcher, Hannibal Buress as Ben Rogers, and Matthew Gray Gubler as Joe Harper.
Band of Robbers opens in theaters and on VOD Jan. 15. Watch the trailer, which contains some mature language, above.
