LAIKA, the stop-motion animation studio that brought you Coraline and ParaNorman, is back with a new film that should be on your radar for 2016. Enter the world of Japanese-inspired gods and monsters in the first trailer for the 3D stop-motion and CG hybrid Kubo and the Two Strings.
Written by ParaNorman’s Marc Haimes and Chris Butler, the story centers on a young storyteller named Kubo, who accidentally summons a spirit from his past. Equipped with his fallen father’s samurai armor and his magical shamisen instrument, the boy teams up with Monkey and Beetle for a journey to save his family.
Art Parkinson, who famously plays Rickon Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones, leads the voice cast, which also features Charlize Theron, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara, and George Takei.
Kubo and the Two Strings is directed by Travis Knight and will be released in theaters on Aug. 19, 2016.
