Ben Hatke has a knack for writing stories that focus on smart, young characters who become caught up with robots, mythical creatures, and alien invasions. And his latest graphic novel, Mighty Jack, out this fall from First Second, is no exception.

In a modern-day adaptation of the classic Jack and the Beanstalk fairytale, the acclaimed writer and artist of Julia’s House and Little Robot takes on the story of Jack, who lives with a single parent and an autistic sister. When Jack finds himself in the middle of an otherwise boring summer, and his sister convinces him to trade their mom’s car for a box of magic beans, everything changes — including his garden, which becomes home to everything from vegetables that bite to a dragon.
