Matthew McConaughey’s intense stare got its close-up in the poster for Free State of Jones, and he’s front and center in a new trailer just released for the upcoming Civil War action-drama.

The actor stars as Mississippi farmer Newt Knight, who rebelled against the Confederacy during the war and led other white farmers and local slaves to establish the Free State of Jones, in Jones County, Mississippi.

“I’m tired of it. You, me, all of us — we’re all out there dying so they can stay rich,” he says in the trailer, later adding, “This fight’s for our children, and our children’s children.”

After the war, Knight married a former slave named Rachel (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), established a unique mixed-race community in the post-war South, and continued his struggle into Reconstruction.

Directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), Free State of Jones also stars Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali. The film will arrive in theaters on May 13.
